Mike Corwin

Mike has spent almost 30 years working as an investigator tracking down and interviewing witnesses often while working in high crime areas. Through his experiences, Mike developed and relied upon situational awareness and de-escalation techniques to remain safe while getting the job done. Further, through his work, Mike has investigated violent behavior, and how victims are chosen by attackers. Mike has made it his life’s commitment to help others, and for the last eight years, along with Rich, he has taught people from all walks of life in a self-defense program of his own creation. Combining skills learned through years of study of Philippine and Korean martial arts, Mike’s program allows anyone, regardless of size, strength, or fitness level to learn to defend themselves using reality-based techniques. Mike teaches and trains at Blackman Martial Arts Academy where he has earned 3rd Degree Black Belts in Taekwondo and Hapkido. MIke initially began training in Philippine self-defense techniques in Los Angeles in the late 1980s. He resumed his training in Philippine martial arts with a focus on weapons disarms in 2006.

Rich Fields

Rich brings nearly 22 years of world-wide military experience combined with a life-long education in Martial Arts to Personal Safety Education LLC. His desire to help others and friendly approach has enabled students to learn self-defense regardless of any limitations or fitness levels. Rich first attained the level of 2nd Degree Black Belt in Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do, competing internationally and studying in Southern California under the tutelage of Grandmaster Michael Cox, PhD. Rich then enhanced his training by working for the University of New Mexico Hospital Mental Health Department where he learned verbal techniques and quick thinking were much more useful than brute force. Using this experience, Rich’s travels have taken him to many far-off areas where situational awareness, de-escalation techniques and good judgement were critical to avoiding bad outcomes. From Africa to Iraq to South America…Rich’s experience benefits our clients’ training and education programs. Since 2009, Rich trains and teaches as a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and Hapkido at Blackmans Martial Arts Academy in Albuquerque, NM under Masters Phillip and Kristine Blackman. Along with Michael, he also instructs formal self-defense classes with and without weapons based on Philippine martial art styles.
